Mildly spec-bio Midnight Crew designs! Fair warning: The image description on this one is LONG. I also have a handful of extra thoughts on their designs, which I will add below.

Additionally, I'm still not entirely sure on how I feel about giving CD (carapacian eqivelent) dwarfism, and I definitely intend on revisiting that + how I want to portray his character at a later date when I'm more well read, because I have a lot of Thoughts about him, how he's written, and how he's generally treated by the rest of the intermission fandom at large. I wanna do right by him, avoid stereotypes, etc, but I'm not sure I'm fully equipped for that at the moment.

Also I fucked up the rank markings a bit, and I only realized that upon revisiting this image. Spades is NOT a rook. The way I have it set up NOW, is like this: (in rank order)

  • Royalty: Abstract crown symbol. (BQ, BK)
  • Bishop: Spade Symbol. (SS)
  • Rook: Diamond symbol. (DD)
  • Knight: Heart symbol. (HB)
  • Pawn: Clubs symbol. (CD)
  • Rooks and Knights are very close in rank, but usually outrank each other differently depending on what kind of job they're in. Rooks are the 'middle class' area of carapacians, holding less canon-fodder-y military positions, and can get relatively high in clerical and admin jobs. They also do most of everything else that isn't too backbreaking or dangerous, as those jobs usually go to pawns, who are the lowest in the class system.

Knights, however, are specially designed heavyweight fighters made specifically for size and strength, so they'll typically outrank other Rook foot soldiers, but it's less common for them to have higher ranking military positions, especially ones that don't see combat. They're almost never seen in jobs that don't align with combat, guard duties, or anything not focused on their strength.

Bishops hold the positions too high for rooks, but too low for the king or queen. Council type jobs, or sometimes even specialty fighters.

Pawns are usually servants or battlefield canon fodder. They are the most mass produced class of carapacian, lowest on the ladder, and they were viewed mostly as disposable, especially by higher ranking military officers. The differences in rank/class/caste are MUCH more extreme for the carapacians from the Troll's session, as the game will tailor their societies to still be familiar enough for the players to understand, but alien enough to be interesting, new, and weird without losing empathy or recognition.

Extra design thoughts for each of the crew:

    • SS:
    • Slick’s shell carvings for the crew are under his collarbones ‘because it’s cool’
    • (And so they’re close to his heart)
    • This man is all sharp edges. He does NOT eat enough food and this fact is the bane of Droog’s existence. (“SPADES, if you don’t eat the frog damn dinner I made, I’ll make sure you’ll be eating it through a TUBE.”)
    • (He’s probably got ARFID because of the Autism.)
    • He is also very commonly missing teeth, because his second-favorite way of hurting someone is to bite them and leave teeth stuck inside them. (Snowman and Crowbar have quite the collections.)
    • His first favorite way is stabbing,
    • And his third favorite way is biting again (but this time he didn’t luck out and leave them some teeth.)

    • DD:
    • Droog’s shell carvings are down his spine because it’s the coolest place for them, and because it’s the most painful to get done. (High pain tolerance flexing.)
    • Also, it’s because the crew are the only people in the world he trusts to have his back, to be generally behind him at all.
    • Seriously, around anyone else, he’s almost ALWAYS just slightly behind them. His favorite pastime is being as creepy as possible.
    • It’s also-also so that he can have Slick’s spade beneath his own diamond, just to piss him off.
    • He’s surprisingly muscular!
    • He doesn’t mention his heat pits often, or ever, because he loves to keep the fact that he can ‘see’ you through the wall a secret. (He is so fucking proud of that, though.)

    • CD
    • Club’s carvings are on the back of his wrists so he can see them as much as possible!
    • Also, because he works with his hands a lot.
    • He’s a lot smarter than people give him credit for. I will not tolerate Clubs Deuce slander in this house
    • Also he’s handsomely fat

    • HB
    • Heart’s carvings are around his heart because he loves his crew :o)
    • Hearts is ALSO handsomely fat. You and pry fat Boxcars out of my cold dead hands.
    • To elaborate on the carapacian teeth lore- Carapacians have sort of shark-like teeth, and can just grow replacements when they lose them, unlike humans. Boxcars keeps growing teeth even when he hasn’t lost any though, so a good, close-up view of his mouth is fucking SCARY. (Or hot, or both, depending on who you are.)

    Image Description

ID: A digital drawing showing op’s headcanons for carapacians, a race of bald, bug-like aliens. Specifically, the image features all four members of the midnight crew. The four dersites have black shells with undertones of purple or magenta. Interlocking plates of hard carapace cover their bodies, with lighter colored skin sometimes visible beneath. There are unprotected areas of soft skin around their neck, shoulder, and other joints for mobility. Their eyes are solid white.
Spades Slick is a short, skinny man. Slick has dark purple undertones to his shell, sharp teeth, a very sharp face, and lots of assorted scars. He is wearing a disheveled white button up shirt with a heavy black suit jacket. He is not wearing a tie, and is wearing a wide-brimmed fedora. There is a second version of his main reference image that shows a version with his missing right eye. There are two additional detail shots on the side of the image. The first shows the four card suits he has carved into his shell across his chest, directly under his collarbones. (heart, club, spade, diamond.) The second one shows the base of his neck and upper back. Interlocking plates of carapace follow his spine, and at the base of his neck, his shell plates form the shape of a spade.
The text on his image reads:
‘Spades’ marking on back of neck (Rook, off-model)
    Crew shell carvings on collarbones
    ‘Off Model’ Traits:
Short & Scrawny (should be more droog-ish in height/size)
    Short claws
Pretty crooked teeth, & usually has a few extras
‘Spade’ marking is warped, Rooks should have Diamond markings.
Diamonds Droog is a tall, imposing man. Droog has dark magenta undertones to his shell, and sharp teeth with longer canines. He is wearing an immaculate suit and tie, and a homburg hat. The first close-up image shows the base of his neck and his spine, with a diamond shaped shell plate at the center of the base of his neck. Beneath it, on the interlocking plates that cover his spine, the other three card suits are carved. (Spade, Heart, club.) The second close up image shows his teeth, which are very sharp. His canines in particular are much longer than the others, and are almost vampire-like.
The text on his image reads:
‘Diamonds’ marking on back of neck (Rook)
    Crew shell carvings on spine
    ‘Off Model’ Traits:
    Vampire-like teeth
Heat pits (usually specific to Knights, like boxcars).
Clubs Deuce is a small, fat man. Clubs has dark purple undertones to his shell, and one sharp snaggle-tooth sticking out of the corner of his mouth. He is wearing a dusty purple turtleneck sweater, a back trench coat, and a wide ‘boss of the plains’ hat. In the center of his forehead, a lighter purple patch of skin forms the shape of the clubs symbol. The extra reference images show Clubs’s three-fingered hands, and the way the carapace covered joints of his fingers work. Two card suit symbols are carved into the shell of each wrist. (Heart and diamond, club and spade.)
The text on his image reads:
    ‘Clubs’ marking on forehead (Pawn)
Crew shell carvings on back of wrists
    ‘Off Model’ Traits:
    Carapacian dwarfism
(His ‘model’ is generally much more W.V shaped)
Random sharp ‘snaggle’ teeth (he is low rank, and thus an herbivore)
3 fingers (one of the most common off model traits, especially for pawns).
There is a small doodle in the corner of the image of a stick-figure style clubs with a comically massive cartoony un-detailed penis for no reason.
Hearts Boxcars is a tall, fat man. Hearts has dark magenta undertones to his shell, and massive sharp teeth. He is wearing a black button-up shirt, and a cowboy hat. The extra reference image shows his bare chest, where a heart-shaped shell plate sits in the center. Beneath it, the other three card suit symbols are carved. (Diamond and spade, then club.)
The text on his image reads:
(Also has heat pits like a snake, which is a normal Knight trait)
‘Hearts’ marking between collarbones, and on back of hands (Knight)
Crew shell carvings in center of chest
    ‘Off Model’ traits:
    Significantly more teeth
(Continues to grow more even when none are lost)
Pretty huge, even for a Knight.
    END ID.
